Russia: Georgia can 'forget' regaining provinces

advertisement

The Georgian ambassador to the United States, H.E. Vasil Sikharulidze, said Russia was employing "scorched-earth" tactics — destroying Georgian commercial and military infrastructure and burning down religious sites beyond the conflict area of South Ossetia.

"What defenses does Georgia have? Because of the cease-fire agreement, which Russia has not honored, Georgian troops are being moved to organize a defensive line 10 kilometers (six miles) away from Tbilisi," he said.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Seems there are enough independent reports of Russia using "scorched earth" military tactics against the tiny nation of Georgia to believe it. It wouldn't be a surprise, as the Russia military has been using brutal tactics in Chechnya for years, like "indiscriminate, disproportionate bombardment" and torture.

But this is par for the course for Russia, who illegally and brutally occupied ethnically distinct nations like Armenia, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia for half a century. Moscow even erased these nations from maps, and got Western cartographers to follow along without question?!?!?!? Isn't that special?

I've been looking around, and all I can find is "religious sites." There have been a lot of heated diplomatic statements flying around, but it wouldn't surprise me if the Russians knocked a couple of churches over -- it's "scorched earth," remember?

I think we're going to see more of this with other former satellites, and more half-hearted protests from the West. One day, perhaps, it will be too late for Europe. I doubt the Euros have the stomach to stand for anything. Perhaps Sarkozy, perhaps not.

I heard a report on NPR this afternoon that despite Russia's agreement to pull out, massive amounts of armor are moving in.

The Soviet Russian propaganda machine churned out lies for 70 years (remember Orwell's Ministry of Truth?). You don't think they're going to start telling the truth now?

No, I think something truly bad has been launched, and with little concern about the consequences. Much wringing of the hands awaits those who rely on the Russian pipeline.

I've got no sympathy for these Putin's-ass-kissers, like German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who'd sell their first born for a barrel of cheap oil.

I won't. I'm riding the bus, walking, taking the train, working from home, recycling, using passive solar, and encouraging others to do so also.

Chavez, Putin, and the House of Saud can shove their oil where the sun don't shine.

I thought Merkel has insisted Putin withdraw immediately.

Well, Russia's invasion must've changed her mind, because previously, she said "neither Ukraine nor Georgia is stable enough to enter" NATO.

I'm frankly surprised she changed her tune so fast.
