Homosexuality - punishable by death?

advertisement

The Norwegian Islamic Council is still waiting for a reply from the European Fatwa Council before it decides whether or not it is in favour of the death penalty for homosexuality. "Unacceptable," says lesbian Sara Asmeh Rasmussen. ...

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

"It's wrong of the Islamic Council to wait for the "verdict" from the fatwa council in such an important case. By not saying 'no' to death penalties for gays, it shows attitudes that conflict with both democratic and humanitarian values," says Sara Azmeh Rasmussen. She is the only openly lesbian Muslim in Norway.

Excuse me. Is this Norway? Is this the 7th century? I'm pinching myself to make sure this isn't all a dream.

Rasmussen's got guts.

I read this earlier but didn't comment. Incredible isn't it? How the Left can continue to defend Muslims when they push for this, yet rip Christians to shreds when they don't want to allow gay marriage is beyond me. I personally am all for gay marriage--and am foursquare against instituting sharia law in Norway and killing people for being gay....

Yes, gays have steadily become more accepted in the West. There's still a long way to go, but several states have legalized gay marriage. There a gay pride parades, gays in the workplace, shops with pink triangles or multi-colored flags out front. As is the case in Norway... to a point.

Europeans have been too tolerant... not of gays, but of Islamic extremists. A civic/religious organization considering whether to impose the death penalty on gays? I wonder what the Norwegian government's stance is on this.

What its really about is-- tolerance of intolerance. I wonder how much more homophobia countries in Europe will accept? How much longer those on the left who claim to be advocates of human rights will continue to makes exceptions-- whenever the perpetrators happen to be Muslim? Its a nasty double standard-- its extreemly hypocritical-- and I think that little by little people are starting to wake up to this!

It doesn't even make sense. Northern European countries are (were?) probably the most tolerant towards gays. But everything seems to change -- freedom of speech, rules governing how one treats his wife, incendiary sermons, etc. -- when immigrants, mainly Muslim, are brought into the picture.

Remember that the Nazis hated gays, but I doubt any Scandinavian government would permit some neo-Nazi group from deciding ("ruling") on whether gays should get the death penalty or not.

You can see the parallel of this right here on the Vine, too! Lately (somehow) I feel like more Conservatives are standing up for gay rights than liberals! These liberals are so worried about offending Muslims (at 1.5 billion people, hardly a worldwide minority!) that they excuse the executions of gays in Iran; the encroaching of civil liberties in Scandanavia; and wicked lawsuits in the UK; persecutions of writers and publishers in Canada---seems like America really is alone these days...but for how long?

Will we soon start sacrificing our human rights for tolerance of those who believe sharia is more important than humanity? Will we slip back into medieval times, just so we don't run the risk of being termed......intolerant?

It's truly bizarre. We'll hear all sorts of commentary advocating, for example, the rights of gays to marry in the U.S. from the Left. But then silence over Iran's executions of gays -- even gay minors (children). Now this is bizarre:

... The key forum at this year's annual Cairo Anti-War Conference was titled "Bridge-building Between the Left and Islam," and focused on practical ways to increase cooperation. The aim of the conference sessions were described in one piece of literature as tackling "the challenges and prospects facing the international anti-war and pro-intifada movements" and planning "strategy and tactics for bridging the gap and uniting Islamist and leftist ranks in the face of U.S. imperialism and Zionism." ...
